"Leaders aren't born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work."
Vince Lombardi
This simple, yet profound quote from Vince Lombardi is great news for all of us who work to become outstanding leaders: leaders in our organizations, our teams, our families and our community. Leadership skills can be learned and developed. But learning leadership is an ongoing process, not a place we arrive at or a final destination. Our firms and organizations require us to be adaptive, continually navigating the change and uncertainty that we face, applying our skills to varying circumstances and unique individuals.
In my 25 years of experience as a practicing CPA, former firm partner and often informal coach to clients, staff and colleagues, I have witnessed a wide variety of leaders across a spectrum of industries and organizations. Some have been incredibly effective in their leadership and others wrecked havoc on their people and ultimately their firms.
My desire to learn more about the theory underlying the practical application of leadership, coupled with my passion and interest in helping others achieve their own success, led me to become a student of leadership and organization and individual change, both in the completion of my Masters of Organization Development degree and my coaching certification through the Hudson Institute.
The "marriage" of my practical experience in the business and financial community with the underlying theories of leadership, individual and organizational change come together to provide my executive coaching and organization consulting clients with a resource that combines a unique background of experience and training. Experience that leads them, with their hard work and effort, to breakthrough results. Leaders are made, not born.
Through The Leadership Notebook, I will be periodically sharing my insights, intelligence and inspiration on the concepts of leadership and change. I welcome your thoughts and comments and hope to hear your thoughts as well.
To your success,
Mary
